Mind over Memes: Passive Listening, Toxic Talk, and Other Modern Language Follies by Diana Senechal ISBN: 978-1538115169

When I first heard the description of Mind over Memes: Passive Listening, Toxic Talk, and Other Modern Language Follies by Diana Senechal, I thought that it would be a book about how low this generation has sunk regarding its language skills.

I figured that the author would be discussing things like how we now refer to “ as double quotation marks.  Or, that we would hear about phrases like, “I know, right?” when it is obvious we think it is correct because we were the one who just said whatever the speaker is remarking about.

I was sort of lost in the introduction when the author began to comment about Donald Trump.  My thought is, “If one intends to make a political statement, shouldn’t they disclose that in the book description?”

I am of the mind that if I pay to see a football game, I pay to see the players play and not make a political statement.  If I pay to see a play, I don’t expect to hear a political statement.

After reading a while longer, I felt even stronger that the author used bait and switch to talk more about her political views.  She didn’t just go after the far right; she also when after the extreme left, so it was fair and balanced.

All this aside, there is a lot to think about when reading this book.  A good bit of what this book causes us to ponder is why such things are the way they seem to be.

Who hasn’t heard an alleged scholar say, “The research has shown...”?  They generally do this when they know they don’t have any real evidence to back them up.  This is very much how someone who has no argument will do by making a joke about the opposition, which proves nothing about the subject at hand.  An example would be an episode of Murphy Brown when the character Myles says, “Reaganomics, a joke”. He never said why he thought it was a joke.

Readers are also told about how “Team” has become overused. The author is spot on with this one.

If Mind over Memes was written for the common man or the good ole’ down home redneck, it missed its mark.  There are many words that are complex which were used when a much simpler term could have been used.  This makes it a not-so-readable book.

Overall, Mind over Memes will make you think and stretch your mind just a little.  It is good book for those looking for subjects of scholarly debate.  You probably won’t hear it discussed down at Joe’s Bait & Tackle Shop and All Night Taco Stand. You may hear it discussed when a couple of winos get together at their wine and cheese party and discuss books that are designed to impress the other guests.

Giving It All Away…and Getting It All Back Again: The Way of Living Generously by David Green and Bill High ISBN: 978-0-310-34794-1

By now you have heard countless times that, “You can’t outgive God.”  This is the story of how David Green and Hobby Lobby tried to out give God and failed.  Maybe you should try it sometime.

Giving It All Away…and Getting It All Back Again: The Way of Living Generously by David Green and Bill High takes readers through Green’s early years as a child all the way up to where he is now.

One great thing about Giving it All Away is that it fits on almost all of the blogs and YouTube Channels we have.  It is a book about business, so it fits on Redneck MBA. It is a book about religion and especially tithing, so it fits all kind of ways on How to Manage Your Monkey.  It is a book so, of course, it fits on Book Reviews by Bird. And everything fits on Random Thoughts and Observations so, it fits there.

This book is a wonderful story of how Hobby Lobby took on the “guvment”, as we rednecks say, and won. But it is mostly a story about giving back.  It shares how a large Pentecostal Holiness family gave much more than their due and inspired their children to do the same.

Hobby Lobby makes such a great juxtaposition to Walmart it is uncanny.  A comparison and contrast between the two companies would make a great case study, thesis, or dissertation.

Walmart is all about the mighty dollar.  They squeeze every vendor to get a better deal and leave the vendor with less. Hobby Lobby make sure everyone gets a fair deal.

Walmart runs all over their employees. Walmart employees have to work Thanksgiving or be fired.  Hobby Lobby is closed on Sunday. Walmart is open 24/7/364. Hobby Lobby closes at 8 PM so their employees can spend time with their families.

Hobby Lobby is so supportive of a person’s right to life that they took on the U. S. Government, and WON. Walmart sells the “morning after pill” on their sales floor.  The Walton family is/was allegedly Christian, but the stores Sam left behind don’t reflect it in any way.

What would the world look like if EVERY company displayed true Christian values like Hobby Lobby?

Giving it All Away would make a great small group Bible study for your church.  It would make a great book for your chamber of commerce to distribute to all its members so that members could read it and see that it works to put God in control of your business, large or small.

We really cannot say enough about Giving it All Away.

Innercise: The New Science to Unlock Your Brain's Hidden Power by John Assaraf

If you have ever wondered why you break your New Year’s Resolutions very early, drop your diet, or stop exercising regularly, Innercise: The New Science to Unlock Your Brain's Hidden Power by John Assaraf may help you to answer those questions.

In this book, Assaraf explains the inner workings of the mind and why our brains override our plans.  He also gives us answers to how we can overcome this problem.

You aren’t broken, just human, which sometimes is the same thing.

The author uses a hybrid of NLP, LOA, Self-Hypnosis, Mindfulness, and other disciplines to help his readers learn ways to change the patterns of self-sabotage.

Innercise is well written and takes the time to explain the science and psychology behind his methods. We like this book because it is compatible with the Christian faith.

You will want to read this book before you make your New Year’s Resolutions.  Order your copy today and feel better, soon.

Cult City: Jim Jones, Harvey Milk, and 10 Days That Shook San Francisco by Daniel J. Flynn

If someone accuses you of “Drinking the Kool-Aid”, the intention is to be saying that you are following along with an ideology blindly or that you are mindlessly buying into a what someone else wants you to believe.

When you read Cult City: Jim Jones, Harvey Milk, and 10 Days That Shook San Francisco by Daniel J. Flynn, you will understand why this is incorrect.

Drinking the Kool-Aid is meant to refer to the mass suicide of over 900 people in Guyana, South America, back in November 1978.  But, no one at Jonestown drank any Kool-Aid.

That is just a very small part of the distorted information that we got from the news following this event.  The news media at that time wanted us to believe that no one saw this coming. If you believe that, you Drank the Kool-Aid.

Enquiring minds wanted to know back then.  In fact, The National Enquirer was one of the few media sources that got things right.

We are doomed to repeat this event because those who don’t know their history are doomed to repeat it.  Most of us don’t know the true history of the mass suicide. Most of us don’t know that our government had every reason to know what was going on.

Cult City is chock full of information about a series of events and a web of things that combined to make such a thing possible.  You will find how history was revised and we have all been forced to drink the Kool-Aid by the media and others.

This book is very eye-opening.  It does have multiple uses of The Lord’s Name in vain.  Readers are carpet bombed with the F-Bomb and we are exposed to the intimate private lives of Jim Jones and many B-rate politicians and celebrities. We disclose this because our readership is mostly Christian and they want to know this.

Creating Sales Stars: A Guide to Managing the Millennials on Your Team by Stephan Schiffman with Gary Krebs ISBN: 978-0-8144-3938-8

Many of we baby boomers see the Millennial Generation as a bunch of work-brittle, entitled, lazy, people who expect to be paid for not working. Many of us have experienced this first hand.

In the book Creating Sales Stars: A Guide to Managing the Millennials on Your Team by Stephan Schiffman with Gary Krebs, we are told that nothing could be further from the truth.

So, the question here is, do you trust what you see and experience or what an author tells you is the truth?

Readers are also told why we should adapt our way of looking at this generation.  The tone of the book appears to be, “Just deal with it”. We are given a lot of WHY we should just deal with it and only a little of HOW to deal with it.

There may be a little truth to what the author teaches. The fact remains that we are in a job seekers’ market because this generation switches jobs often and expects to be paid well while being trained. This book could well make the case that we have developed a new career, “Trainee”. Meanwhile, more and more jobs go overseas to places where people WILL work.

The book is well written and does provide some excellent advice.  However, reading this book won’t solve your problem. What it will do is make you feel a lot less empowered and, if you are the owner of a company, will probably make you want to close up shop or move to another country.

In the book, the author speaks of how ethical this generation is.  There may be some validity to that but, readers should trust what they see in the real world and not what they read in a book.  This is the same generation that often cheated on tests in college and also expected good college grades for very subpar work.

We can only give this book a mediocre rating and very little in the way of recommendation.  This isn’t so much because the writing is flawed; it isn’t. We give it an average rating because the premise is flawed.

Code Name: Papa Book 2: My Extraordinary Life While Hiding in Plain Sight by John Murray ISBN: 978-0-9994502-5-3

One thing that makes me sad is that the nature of this book excludes it from some of our blogs.  It won’t fit the business, personal finance, or religious categories, which means some of our followers won’t get to know about how wonderful Code Name: Papa Book 2: My Extraordinary Life While Hiding in Plain Sight by John Murray really is.

This is book two in the series. We have not read Book One, yet. We hope to.

This is a very different kind of spy thriller. The main reason is that it is all true. When one reads fiction, you pretty much know exactly what is going to happen.  This is not so when you deal with cold, hard facts.

The stories are excellent and very entertaining.  This is the kind of book that makes one walk into walls.  You know, you don’t want to stop reading, but you really have to do other things, too.  You don’t put the book down (until you have to) and then, smash, right into the wall. Maybe this book should come with a danger warning.

If you love a good spy vs spy book, Code Name: Papa: Book 2 can’t be beat.  This will make a great gift for that military buff, history buff, or avid reader on your list.  A serious word of warning: if you are claustrophobic, you will want to refrain from reading this book.

Grab several copies today and start doling them out.
